An Eventful Month in Richmond
Although Richmond may be small in size, the scale of the city's events are getting bigger and more exciting day by day. With a handful of festivals, a major album release from a few local friends of ours, and an American-made menswear pop-up market, September is shaping up to be an eventful month.
First up, this weekend we have the Fall Line Fest. The inaugural Fall Line Fest will feature more than 40 local and national bands, live mural paintings, and special artist/chef menu collaborations that will only be available during the festival. For us, Richmond’s food, art, and growing music scenes help to make the city what it is, and this festival is a celebration of the city’s charm.
Speaking of music, Richmond’s very own J. Roddy Walston and the Business will drop their new album, Essential Tremors, September 10th. on ATO Records. For those of you who can’t wait – us included – stream the complete album on Rolling Stone and pre-order Essential Tremors here. The band will kick off their national tour in Columbus, OH tomorrow night and will run through November 7th. Click here for the complete tour schedule and be on the lookout for more from J. Roddy Walston and the Business on our blog later this month.
A couple of years ago, the first RVA Street Art Festival was held at the former Haxall Point Power Plant, which is located beside the downtown Richmond Canal and only a few steps away from our front door. The RVA Street Art Festival returns September 11-15th, at the former GRTC Bus Depot. Nationally and internationally acclaimed artists will join Richmond’s local talent to paint murals on the former trolley barns, create sculptures using materials on site and showcase mixed media exhibits throughout the depot.
To round out the month, the 10th Northern Grade traveling market will be coming to Richmond September 21st and 22nd. With recent stops in San Francisco, Nashville, and Chicago, the mobile pop-up showcases the best in American-made menswear. Our across-town neighbors, Need Supply Co., will host the pop-up and we are looking forward to participating alongside brands such as Billy Reid, The Hill-Side, Shockoe Denim, and more. This past August marked my seventh complete year living in Richmond. When I first moved here – and even five years ago – we didn’t have all of these unique events going on. To have one would have been enough, but to have all three, and to top it of with J. Roddy Walston and the Business’ new album release in a single month speaks volumes of Richmond’s collective progress. I’m proud to call Richmond home and I’m enthusiastic to see our city grow. *Intro photograph by Andrew Bain
