Classic Style // Take Ivy
When the English version of Take Ivy was announced a few years ago, I immediately pre-ordered it. This was back in 2010 and until then, the reputation of this sartorially iconic book was more of myth than of fact, particularly in the U.S.
In the early 1960s, Japanese photographer Teruyoshi Hayashida traveled throughout the American northeast documenting the noteworthy style of the students on the campuses of Ivy League colleges and universities. Take Ivy, which was originally published in Japan in 1965, features this collection of candid photographs. For many of the admirers of classic Ivy League style living in Tokyo at the time, this became more than a book, but a guide to style.
As expected, there’s no shortage of Weejun loafers, plaid shorts, and Oxford-cloth shirts throughout the pages of the book. What is most interesting is that the photographs look as if they could have been photographed no more than 20 years ago. This is just further evidence that certain styles transcend the test of time.
