Tom Roberts is a founding member of venture capital fund Harbert Growth Partners, which provides growth capital to emerging entrepreneurial leaders. He's spent the last 20+ years as a principal in creating and investing in new businesses and as an advisor to entrepreneurs and corporate executives on operating growth, financing and exit strategies. We caught up with Tom for this week's 3 Questions.

If you weren't a venture capital investor, what would you be?

I would have continued a family tradition of military service if I hadn’t pursued a business career. In fact, I interviewed with Paul Trible’s father almost 35 years ago for a West Point appointment when he was a Senator. I have great respect for our nation’s veterans, their families and their service to our country.

What advice would you give your 20 year old self?

Trust your instincts. In today’s era of big data, analytics and artificial intelligence, nothing compares to human judgement in making good decisions. Pull on the thread when something seems amiss, don’t ignore the little warning signs. It will lead to better decisions, better relationships, better investments, etc.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

The comfort and confidence of a fine-fitting Ledbury shirt. As my wife will attest, I have a closetful.
